Drywall Texture Matching

Drywall Texture Matching for Orange Peel, Knockdown and Smooth Walls

A patch only disappears when the texture around it matches. We match orange peel, knockdown, splatter, hand-trowel and smooth finishes on walls and ceilings, then blend the paint so you can’t find the repair.

The Textures We Match

Most homes we work in have one of five finishes. Each one needs a different tool, mix and timing, which is why a quick spray-can patch usually stands out.

Orange peel

One of the most common wall textures in Southern California homes. Thin mud is sprayed in small droplets that look like the skin of an orange. We set the hopper pressure, tip size and mud thickness to match the size and spacing of your droplets, test on a board first, then spray the repair.

Knockdown

Heavier spatter that is flattened with a wide knife once it starts to set. Timing decides the look: knock it down too early and it smears, too late and it stays sharp. We match the size of the flat spots and how much of the surface they cover, on walls and ceilings.

Splatter

Raised drops of mud left as sprayed, without being knocked down. You see it on ceilings and in garages. We match drop size and density so the repaired area doesn’t read as a cluster.

Hand-trowel and skip trowel

Applied by hand, so every wall is a little different. We study the pattern and the direction of the strokes and rebuild it by hand around the repair.

Smooth walls

No texture to hide behind, so the patch has to be dead flat. We skim coat, sand and prime until the repair disappears under side light, then paint. Smooth ceilings after popcorn ceiling removal get the same treatment.

Why Texture Patches Show, and How We Prevent It

When a repair stands out, it is almost always one of these four things:

  • Wrong droplet size or spacing. Close isn’t enough on a wall you look at every day. We test on a scrap board until it matches.
  • No primer under the texture. Bare joint compound soaks up texture and paint differently from the old wall, so the patch flashes. We prime the patch before and after texturing.
  • Patch edges not feathered. A hard edge shows through any texture. We feather the patch wide and flat first.
  • Paint that doesn’t match the wall. The right color can still look off if the sheen or age is different. We blend the paint out to a corner or edge when a spot touch-up won’t hide it. See our paint touch-ups.

How Texture Matching Works

  1. Send 2-3 photos. One close-up of the texture and one from a few feet back. We reply with a quote in about 10 minutes.
  2. Repair and prime. We fix the damage, feather the patch flat and prime it so the new texture takes evenly.
  3. Test, texture and blend. We test the texture on a board, apply it to the repair and a little past it, let it dry, prime again and blend the paint.

Most texture matching is finished in one visit as part of the repair. Large areas and hand textures can need a second visit for drying time.

What Affects the Price

  • How big the repair is and how many spots need texture
  • The texture type. Hand-trowel and heavy knockdown take longer than orange peel
  • Wall or ceiling. Ceilings take more setup and protection
  • Paint. A spot touch-up costs less than blending a full wall

Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers below to help you get your home back to a smooth, seamless finish.

Can you match orange peel texture on a wall?

Yes. Orange peel is the texture we match most often. We adjust the sprayer and mud until the droplets on a test board match your wall, then texture the repair and blend the paint.

Yes. A ceiling takes more setup and floor protection, but the process is the same: match the spatter, knock it down at the right moment and blend the paint.

Not when the texture matches and the patch is primed before painting. If your paint has faded or the sheen is different, we blend the paint to the nearest corner or edge so there is no visible box around the repair.

It helps if you have the can or the color name. If you don’t, we match the color from the wall.

For a small hole inside a closet, often yes. On a main wall or ceiling, aerosol texture rarely matches the droplet size and tends to flash under paint. If a DIY patch already shows, we can sand it back and redo it.

Our focus is repairs and blending the area around them. If a wall has several patches or mismatched texture, retexturing the full wall can make it read as one surface. Send photos and we will tell you which makes more sense.
